Chess and Chips

By Emily Mitchell/Reported by Wendy Cole

Gary Kasparov overcame the computer chess champ Deep
Thought, wiping out his switched-on opponent in a Manhattan
match, but the triumph by the world's top player could be
short-lived. Deep Thought has already beaten several grand
masters, and a more powerful version could be ready in three
years. "Chess is wider than just calculations. You have to use
fantasy, intuition and some kind of prediction," said Kasparov.
And he's prepared to take on a new, improved computer adversary:
"I would have to challenge it in order to protect the human
race." That's one move for mankind.
